Key West, Florida
Key West is the last island in the Florida Keys chain. All of the Florida Keys have their own points of interest and charm, but Key West is very special.
The architecture of Key West homes varies greatly from Old Town to the residential neighborhoods of the Casa Marina area of Key West and New Town. The Truman Annex offers a plantation style home in many different layouts. There are roomy estates nestled in the tropical palms of the Truman Annex as well as convenient condominiums that are within walking distance to the beach and to Duval Street, the downtown area of Key West.
Old Town Key West offers every style of home from a “Conch” (pronounced konk) house to an expanded property with guest quarters and a pool. To discover the charm of Old Town, one must take a stroll and discover the quiet lanes and tucked away neighborhoods like “The Meadows” where the smell of night blooming Jasmine fills the air on summer nights.
There are many Key West condo complexes to consider too. Many historic Key West houses have been converted into condominiums in recent years. It provides easy living for both full time and part time residents. There may be some condos that have a transient license included which allows the property to be rented to vacationers.
The Casa Marina area of Key West is located on the oceanside of the island. The homes in these neighborhoods are roomy and many of the properties are on larger lots with pools or room for a pool. The area is convenient to downtown Key West and the beaches on the south side of the island.
Residential Key West consists of the mid section and easternmost side of the island. The architecture is much different in this area of town. There are many more CBS (concrete block structure) homes. This type of home was popular in the 50s but a lot of the homes have been upgraded with new flooring and cabinetry. There are also a select few oceanfront condominium complexes on Smathers Beach and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Key West has a few canal front homes that have access to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.
The next island up from Key West toward Miami is Stock Island. Stock Island holds a Key West address and is home to the Key West Golf Club. This semi-private golf course is lined with beautiful bungalow style townhomes and free standing homes. The gated community has two pools, a club house with golf pro shop and restaurant.
Key Haven is just past Mile Marker 5 and has the most complete boating community in the Lower Keys. Nearly every property in Key Haven has boating access by canal or open water to the Gulf or Atlantic and there are two marinas just a short boat ride away. Key Haven also has a few buildable lots still available, some with open water views.
